It's a wrap!

I just couldn't help myself with that post title. After having been inspired, albeit after the fact, by this post, I found myself falling in love with wrap skirts. They are so versatile and never look the same twice. And the bonus is, with me being so petite, I don't have to worry about sizes, its a perfect fit.

Lock Necklace

This is a very simple necklace to make. I especially like how it looks with a plain white tee.
Adds a little bit of edge without doing too much.

You will need:
1.About 1 meter of a chunky chain. It needs to be chunky so that the lock can fit through the links.
2. Pliers
3. Nail polish of a colour of your choice
4. A lock, small enough to not be uncomfortable around the neck and to fit through the links on the chain.
5. 2/3 jump rings
6. A clasp

Cat-eye Sunglasses

Warning: this is an impertinent post!

I didn't know a pair of sunglasses could make all the difference. On my recent trip to Cape town, my sister and I stumbled upon a street vendor selling some not so average sunglasses and I bought myself a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. They weren't anything unique or expensive but I was pretty pleased with my purchase.

Now I live in a not-so-urban part of the country and I can barely, just barely speak the language (which is frustrating cause everyone refuses to speak English) but I get by. And yet for some reason, ever since I started sporting these new sunglasses even the usually stubborn taxi drivers automatically speak to me in English. I get a different vibe now. I could say there is an inflection of respect in their address but that would be stretching it a bit: Nothing else has changed. I still have my long old braids and my skin is as dark as ever.

Is there something special about these sunglasses?

Exclusivity

Ps. The best gift a lady can own is exclusivity.
I had a purse that was still pretty much functional but was faded and old. Here's me giving it a new lease on life.

 Materials:

An old purse/wallet
Old magazine that you're willing to cut up (I had two copies of this October 2011 Glamour so I decided to use one)
Scissors
All purpose glue
Clear nail polish
Other nail polish optional

Lace 'n chains

Been awol recently, I know. And I dont have any excuses. I have been on holiday from school for the past 6 weeks or so and I'm wondering where all my time went. Have to start classes in a week or so....But in the meantime, I have done a couple of things for a couple of friends and here is what I made for myself this week.

Its a very simple tee style top. I attached the lace at the bottom to add to the length and fancy it up a bit. The zipper neckline and chain I just added cause I love the combination of the two. I love how it came together but I wonder if it's too plain.

To Try list

I am officially a DIY junkie. I can’t help myself anymore. I think about it more than I should and I have a whole bagful of failed or attempted projects (that bag is right about bursting at the seams now).It has become my new best friend, my comfort. Here is the most recent flood of inspiration I’ve gotten from my daily blog reads. Maybe you can attempt something as well?

My Royal Purple

Dress made by me, Model-Ombili
I was recently browsing sewing blogs when I saw a tutorial (can't seem to retrace the blog) where this girl used a satin sash to create a tie neckline. I thought it would be good idea to use on a maxi dress and I went for it. I made a prototype for myself and made this second when my sister said she was interested in the dress and voila!
Here's the finished product! What do you think?
Hope you have a productive 2012!

Raiding his closet

Sweater/Mr.Price,black vest/gifted,belt/Mr.Price,pants/My brother's, Heels/thrifted
I just love the fact that most of my brother's old formal pants are perfect for me, especially since I can never find the perfect size in the women's sections

Foot forward

Rage shoes, White shirt/woolworths, sweater/mr price

This year I've been trying quite hard to be less materialistic, to buy quality and not quantity, and to reuse what I can. But when I saw these shoes I just couldn't resist. Not only are they sexy but they fit like a dream and I'm sure the world over knows how heels can kill a girl's feet. I do wish they were a more versatile colour like black but this off white colour will do just as well.
And as for the sweater and shirt, well, I've been drifting towards the androgynous look as seen herehere and  here and I've been looking around for plain white shirts to start me off.
Maybe sometime soon you'll see the whole look come together.

Have a great week

Escapades

I've been so bored lately I actually decided to get  sewing machine and learn how to sew.it has been easier than I thought it would be, especially since I've been learning from tutorials online but here is some of what I've done so far.Quite a few  mishaps here and there but hey, if I can wear it, it is some sort of success.

The Sartorialist

Lately I've noticed my growing interest in [mostly] fashion blogs and that's how I came across The Sartoriaist. It has become a regular dose of inspiration for me who's still a little timid about expressing myself through what i wear. And yes, I actually had to look up the meaning of that word before I had the aha! moment.

Noun

sartorialism (uncountable)
  1. an interest in matters of or relating to the tailoring of clothing.

Proudly African

While getting my monthly dose of Glamour, I came across loin cloth and ashes, a dynamic South African design label that once again makes me PROUD to be African.

Doing it myself

It has been a semi eventful weekend. I got inspired by Takeoffyourclothes to do this t-shirt dress and i spent Friday trying to make my own [amateur-ish] version. Because I'm very petite, I had to find reasonably small men's shirts, which is not as easy as it may seem.
The dress did turn out better than i expected and I took pics of it to post on the blog but unfortunately the camera had a major malfunction and ALL my pictures were erased. I haven't fixed the problem yet so I had to take these pictures with a phone. [Made a second one just for practice!]

I've just recently jumped onto the DIY bandwagon and for a first project, I'm really proud of myself.
What do you think?
